Be sure your mechanic has an A.S.E. certification prior to letting them fix your car. That means the technician has more than two years of experience and passed a test. That means only the best will work on your car.
Check your coolant levels frequently. Run your car, turn it off then pop the hood. Don’t open your radiator cap if your car is on. Check the radiator fluids using a dipstick and remember to always mix the coolant with water before putting it in the radiator.
Before allowing an auto shop to do repairs to your vehicle, ensure you are aware of the total cost. Ask any questions you have about the service before they start work on the car. You don’t want to get the car back, only to be shocked at how much the repairs cost you.
Referrals will lead you to a great mechanic. Get recommendations from family and friends. Ask them how good the work was, how much they were charged, and if they were satisfied. You can learn first-hand experiences about the honesty and skill of the mechanic.
Get OEM components. These are original manufacturer parts. It can cost a lot less to use parts that are generic, but you won’t get the most out of these things after a while. What is a cheap option now could be an expensive option later.
Leave nothing in your car when you take it to the shop. Mechanics might have to empty the inside of your vehicle and they cannot be held responsible if an item is damaged or missing. You want to remove items from your trunk also.
Watch out for obvious warning signs that a repair person is not up to snuff. If they give you the runaround or ignore any questions, you may not want them. Run, don’t walk, to another mechanic.
